Basic Skills For Beginner Adult Figure Skaters-Spins (part 2) [VIDEO]

Last week in the first of our series on basic skills for adult beginner figure skaters we reviewed the two foot spin.   This week the idea of spinning on one foot is gently introduced.

Our skater is not a complete newbie, she is a actually a lovely ice dancer but she has never really done much free style skating and has never really worked on spins all that much.

In the next few weeks you will see her progress to her first one foot  up-right spin.   Be sure to leave your comments and thoughts below.

I’ve seen coaches use this same technique for teaching kids how to do twizzles.

I enjoyed this video. How hard skating spins are to learn, but so easy to do once learned. I grew up in Miami, Florida and remember learning the “beachball” way in 1978. I remember it becuase the coach brought in a real beachball for us to learn with. Start with forward edges, into a two foot spin, arms out at first, and then just in enough to hold a beachball in front of you. Had to have that perfected, and then start to pick up the outer leg. I don’t remember the transition from one foot to two foot, but I think it just happened over the course of 3 or so months.
